Pricing Guidelines

Pricing my spindles is something I have struggled with over the past year. I have put together this page to give you a general idea of what different priced spindles might look like. As a rule of thumb, spindles will be a base price of $25.00 with $10.00 per hour added for artwork beyond the basic spindle price.

Remember, when you order a spindle, there is a lead time of about 6 weeks or more. You never pay for any spindle up-front. You only pay when your spindle is complete and you have seen a photo of the completed art work. Even then, you can still choose to not accept the spindle with no cost to you.
Here are some examples of spindles and their prices below.

These two spindles, the Pumpkin and Lilac (shown above) , would be good examples of spindles that would price out at $25.00. As you can see, they are lovely to look and and are very reasonably priced. Custom art spindles CAN be had for less that fine, hand turned wood spindles. It all depends on the design you choose and I am happy to help you choose something that speaks to you yet still fits your budget.

These two spindles, the Autumn Road and the Om Mandala would price out a bit higher at $35.00 due to the added complexity of the designs. The Om Mandala is totally hypnotic when it spins and can be made in any color you'd
like.

With added detail, as in this Dragon and Andalusian Horse(below), the pricing goes up to $35.00. Detail always adds time and that adds cost. Lovely to look at and sure to be heirloom pieces, these two spindles are still priced comparable to
fine, turned wood spindles. The main difference is that you choose the artwork and no two spindles are alike.

Very detailed, full color, realistic animals like this Palamino Horse and lovely Kitty will tend to be around $40.00 or so. The same may be true of some designs like more complex dragons or any very detailed, full color design. The more realistic and image gets, the harder it is to get details and proportions perfect. If they are off, even a little, the subject begins to look decidedly wrong.

Finally any fantasy art (such as the two Faeries and this repro of Venus) that is very detailed and has people in it can run from $45.00 on up. These images would be in the $50.00 - $60.00 range. The level of precision and the amount of time it takes to paint these spindles to get them to look right is pretty extreme and that's why they are more expensive. But as you can see, the results can be worth every penny if you want a spindle that you will treasure for a lifetime.

Whorls and Weights

Shown above are the various choices for whorls and the approximate finished wieght of a spindle with each whorl and the shaft size given. All shaft sizes can be adjusted as requested. Whorls can be notched and shafts pointed upon request also. You can reference the whorls by the names shown under them when ordering.

I highly recommend the "Raven" since I have found it to be the most stable, best spinning spindle. The others are very good also, but this is my personal favorite. It also provides a larger area for painting so that I can get finer detail in less time.

The finished sizes and characteristics of my most popular spindles are as follows:

Raven - 3" whorl, 14" long overall - Great for plying and can spin a finer thread than you can imagine! Very fast, long spin that is extremely stable.

Blackbird & Oriole - 2 1/2" whorls, 11" overall length - Excellent general purpose spindles. Both have good spin times and are very stable.
